Interview questions

Interview questions for off-cycle positions and transfers

A place that opens outside the Match is filled quickly, often after one phone call, and the program is trying to learn one thing: is there a problem behind the timing? Plain, prepared answers settle it.

  1. Why are you looking for a position now, outside the Match?

    What they're listening for
Whether there is a problem behind the timing.
    How to answer
Say plainly what made you available (you did not match, a visa delay, a family move, a change of specialty), what you have done since, and when you can start.
    Where it goes wrong
A vague answer that leaves them to guess the worst.
  2. Why are you leaving your current program?

    What they're listening for
Whether you were the problem, and whether it would happen again.
    How to answer
Factual and brief, take your share of responsibility, never criticize the program, and say why this one fits better.
    Where it goes wrong
Blaming your program director or co-residents.
  3. If we offered you the position, how soon could you start, and how would you get up to speed mid-year?

    What they're listening for
Readiness, and whether the paperwork will hold up the start.
    How to answer
Say what is already in place (ECFMG certificate, license or permit, visa, release from any contract) and how you would learn a new system fast.
    Where it goes wrong
    Uncertainty about your own paperwork.
  4. What have you been doing clinically over the last year?

    What they're listening for
Whether your skills are current enough to join a team in progress.
    How to answer
Concrete recent work with patients, how many and what you did, and how you have kept your knowledge current.
    Where it goes wrong
Months with nothing clinical in them and no plan for it.
  5. What would your previous program director say about you?

    What they're listening for
    Honesty. They may well call.
    How to answer
Answer as though they will check: a strength they would name, and something they would say you worked on.
    Where it goes wrong
An answer your reference would not recognize.
