Trade places with another resident

List the spot you hold and where you would go. When a resident there wants your place, we introduce the two of you.

Anonymous until you both agree.

Example

ILFLChicagoMiami
Two second-year internal medicine residents. Each wants to be where the other is, so they trade places.

    List what you hold

Your specialty, your year and your state, then tap the states you would move to. About a minute, with a free account.

  2. 02

    We find the other half

When a resident lists a place you want and wants the place you hold, both of you get an email the same minute.

  3. 03

    You are introduced

One of you proposes, the other accepts, and only then does each get the other's email address. From there it is yours to arrange.

What a swap takes

We introduce you. The move itself is agreed between two residents and two programs, and these are the four things that decide whether it happens.

A swap is two transfers
Each of you leaves one program and joins another. Both program directors have to agree, and each program has to want the resident it would receive.
Your program director has to know
A receiving program verifies your training and asks for a summative evaluation from the program you are leaving, so a swap cannot be completed without your director. Many residents talk to each other first and to their directors second.
Mind your Match commitment
If you matched through the NRMP, your commitment to the program covers the start of training, and leaving early needs a waiver from the NRMP. Check the terms of your own agreement before you agree to dates.
Funding and visas travel with you
A program may count how many years of training have already been funded, and a visa is tied to a sponsor. Ask both GME offices early; these are the two things that most often decide the timing.

Questions about swapping

What is a residency swap?

A swap is two residents or fellows in the same specialty and program year trading places: each transfers into the other's program. It is how a resident moves to another city or state without waiting for a vacancy to open there, and it needs the agreement of both program directors.

Is the swap board free?

Yes, all of it. Listing your position, being matched, proposing a swap and being introduced are free with a free ResidencySpot account. Premium is for vacancy contacts and instant vacancy alerts, and is not needed to swap.

Will my program find out I am looking?

Not from the board. A listing shows your specialty, program year and state, and your city if you choose to give it. It never shows your name, your email address or your program. Another resident learns who you are only if you accept an introduction from them, or they accept one from you.

How does matching work?

A match is two listings that fit both ways: the same track and program year, each resident in a specialty and a state the other would move to. When your listing makes a two-way match, both of you are emailed at once. If a resident lists a place you want but has not named your state, you are emailed too, once, so you can propose: you can propose a swap to any listing on the board that holds what you want.

What happens when I propose a swap?

The other resident is emailed your listing and your note, without your name or address. If they accept, each of you is sent the other's email address and you take it from there. If they decline, nothing is shared.

Can I swap into a different specialty?

You can say you would. A listing always matches within your own specialty, and you can add up to six others you would move into. A change of specialty is harder to arrange than a change of place, because the receiving program has to credit your training.

How long does a listing stay on the board?

A listing stays for 120 days. Before then we email you, and one click keeps it. You can pause it, edit it or remove it at any time, and removing it also removes every request that named it.
