About the program directory

What is in the program directory?

Every US residency and fellowship program ResidencySpot has read from its institution's own website: its specialty and location, and what its page states about the program's length, how many residents or fellows it takes a year, visa sponsorship, international medical graduates, DO applicants, USMLE minimums and graduation-year limits. Filter by program type, specialty and state, free and without an account. Each program's coordinator contact and official page are part of Premium.

Which programs are IMG-friendly or DO-friendly?

Tick IMG-friendly in the quick filters for the programs whose own website says they sponsor a J-1 or H-1B visa or consider international medical graduates; J-1 and H-1B narrow it to one visa's sponsors. Tick DO-friendly for the programs whose page accepts COMLEX or welcomes DO applicants. Each program's page quotes the sentence it rests on; the IMG-friendly lists by specialty and state, with a download, are at /img-friendly-programs.

How do I compare programs?

Turn on Compare above the list and tick up to four programs, or press Compare on a program's own page. The programs you choose stay in a bar at the foot of the window as you browse; open the comparison to see their length, size, visas, eligibility and your fit side by side, with the sentence each page states.

Why are some fields empty?

Every value in the table is what that program's own website states, quoted on its page, and a dash means the page does not say. Pages are read again when they change, so a program that adds its visa policy or class size shows it after the next reading. Nothing is estimated or filled in from elsewhere.

Can I see which programs fit me?

Yes. Build a profile in five questions (US MD, DO or international graduate, specialty, the visa you need, graduation year, Step 2 CK and preferred states) and the table gains a Your fit column for the specialty you are looking at, with a ranked list a press away. The ten best fits and every reason are free; Premium shows the whole list with contacts. The fit is scored only from what each program's page states, and it is not a prediction of matching.

What is the difference between a program and a vacancy?

A program is listed so you can plan applications in the regular cycle, usually through ERAS and the Match. A vacancy is a position a program is filling now, outside the Match, which you apply to directly; those are on the vacancies page.
